Important Note

FolkStudio requires installed and properly configured ASIO sound driver. See this article on what an ASIO driver is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_stream_input_output

Make sure you have an ASIO driver on your computer before running FolkStudio. If your sound card does not come with a dedicated ASIO driver, try this hardware-independent driver:

Trobleshooting

Q: When I start FolkStudio I get an error message saying that ASIO driver cannot be started and I probably have no sound card.
A: Please read here.
Q: FolkStudio works and doesn't show any error messages, but no sound output to sound card.
A: Check Control Panel and documentaton for your ASIO driver. Currently selected driver's Control Panel can be opened from FolkStudio:
Options | Preferences | Audio | Control Panel.
Q: There are clicks (noise, distortion) in output sound.
A:
  1. Try to select another ASIO driver: Options | Preferences | Audio.
"ASIO DirectX Full Duplex Driver" is reported to have problems on some machines, especially at sample rates lower than 44100 Hz.
  2. Try different project sample rates. Some device/driver combinations work correctly only at 44100 or 48000 Hz.
  3. Check FAQ/Troubleshooting information for your ASIO driver.
  4. In ASIO driver's Control Panel, try to increase the size of sound buffers.
  5. Use Windows Task Manager to make sure your CPU load is not at 100% (50% or more for a dual-core machine). If so, check whether all CPU is consumed by FolkStudio or another application (in this case, close that application and try again). If all processor time is used by FolkStudio your computer is probably just too slow to handle the project.
Q: MIDI playback to a device is uneven or becomes uneven after playing for some time.
A: This problem is related to ASIO driver, because it is the source of timing information used for playing MIDI notes. So far we can only suggest to try another ASIO driver.
We noticed this problem only with "ASIO DirectX Full Duplex Driver".
Q: I want to use a software or on-card MIDI synthesizer (e.g. Microsoft Synthesizer) and it works with other applications, but when I try to use it in FolkStudio, MIDI is silent.
A: ASIO driver can monopolize access to a sound card and block it for all other programs, including software MIDI synthesizers. If you have multiple sound cards installed, you may disable one card for ASIO, so software synthesizer could use it. Also, open your Windows Control Panel, then: Sound, Speech and Audio Devices | Audio and un-check Use only default devices to allow MIDI Mapper to select another devices while default one is blocked.
